An Evening of Opera Scenes

Program:

  • Bei Mannern - Die Zauberflöte, Mozart
    James C.S. Liu, Evelyn Griffin
    Pamina offers sympathy and hope to Papageno, a bird-catcher who longs for a wife. Together they reflect on the joys and sacred duties of marital love.

  • Dite alla giovane - La traviata, Verdi
    Stephanie Mann, Tom Weber
    Giorgio Germont, the father of Alfredo Germont, Violetta's lover, having come to ask Violetta to stop her relationship with his son to save the reputation of Alfredo's sister, finds much more than he imagined.

  • Susanna, or via sortite - Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart
    Anne-Louise Klaus, Zachary Ballard, Beth Grzegorzewski
    Susanna and the Countess are dressing up the young page boy, Cherubino, in women's clothes in order to have him take Susanna's place in a romantic tryst suggested by the Count and Susanna has just stepped out when the Count approaches. The Countess frantically locks Cherubino in her bedroom closet. In order to claim her innocence, the Countess says it is Susanna in her closet, when really, she has hidden herself behind a chair. The Count demands that Susanna come from the closet and reveal herself.

  • Komponist/Zerbinetta duet - Ariadne auf Naxos, R. Strauss
    Courtney Miller, Erin Anderson, Yukiko Oba - Pianist
    The opera composer has learned that a comedia dell'arte troupe is also scheduled to perform tonight. He is up in arms at the changes and the insult to music, but Zerbinetta, the crafty comedienne leader of the troupe, turns on her charm and wins him over

  • Tu ne chanteras plus? - Les contes d'Hoffmann, Offenbach
    Miles Rind, Sarah Vincelett, Martha Warren
    Antonia, at the instigation of her beloved Hoffmann, has vowed to give up singing, lest she die of it like her mother before her; but the devilish Dr. Miracle, influencing her magically, makes her think that her mother has returned to urge her to sing. She does so, with fatal result.

Intermission:

  • Mario, Mario, Mario! (Duet) - Tosca, Puccini
    Ethan Bremner, Karen Amlaw
    Tosca jealously questions Cavaradossi, then prays and reminds him of the pleasures of his villa where she would like to go alone with him that evening. Recognizing the Marchesa Attavanti's likeness in Cavaradossi's painting, Tosca explodes with renewed suspicions, but he reassures her of his love.

  • Watch Duet - Die Fledermaus, J.Strauss
    Justin Moore, Sarah Orlovsky
    Gabriel von Eisenstein heads to the ball for some incognito philandering and he gets more than he bargained for. Disguised as a Hungarian countess, Eisenstein's wife is onto his little game, and tricks him into handing over his beloved tool of the trade.

  • Act I duet - Don Giovanni Mozart
    Brian Gonzalez, Alyssa Koogler

  • Don Giovanni Sextet - Don Giovanni - Mozart
    Justin Moore, Sarah Orlovsky, Stephanie Mann, Robyn Lamp, Tom Weber, Miles Rind
    Leporello attempts to abandon Elvira, who has mistaken him for Don Giovanni. Ottavio, Anna, Zerlina, and Masetto capture and threaten him while Elvira begs for pity. Leporello reveals his true identity in order to escape punishment.

  • The Presentation of the Rose - Der Rosenkavalier, R. Strauss
    Amanda Sindel-Keswick, Nora Maynard
    Octavian is supposed to be courting Sophie for the Baron Ochs of Lerchenau, to whom she is engaged. Instead, the present he brings, a silver rose, serves to bring romance between Octavian and Sophie, who fall in love upon first sight.
